How did Bean Creek get its name?

According to legend, the creek was an ordinary creek until a man riding a pack horse came through with a bag of beans. The sack burst, the beans fell into the water, and they grew along the banks. You could go down to the creek and pick a good mess of beans.

What else would you call a community with that many beans in its creek?

The 1862 church and the Bean Creek Cemetery are part of the Sautee Nacoochee district nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. Sunken graves, headstones and field stones on the hillside mark African American resting places from the early 1800s to today.

Cemetery and funeral questions: contact Pastor Harbin, or Mother Andy Allen, committee chair, at (706) 878-2995.
